HOLIDAYS ARE NO EXCUSE: TIPS FOR STAYING FIT ON THE ROAD
Traveling for the holidays? Jet-setting for business? Taking a much-needed (and well deserved) vacation?
Great. But that’s no excuse to neglect your fitness.
While travel is often a time to prioritize other things in life, taking 40, 30, or even 15 minutes out of your day to keep fit on the road is vital to long-term progress as an athlete — and all-around healthier individual. We know it can be tough to keep up with your routine away from home, and sometimes, dropping into the local CrossFit box just isn’t an option.
Below are four of our favorite tips to keep fitness and wellbeing a priority, no matter the location. And they won’t cost you more than half an episode of your favorite TV show.
1. Schedule a hotel workout.
Years ago, CrossFit Games legend Jason Khalipa put together a list of his favorite hotel/travel WODs, and half a decade later, it still stands the test of time. Some require a basic hotel fitness center (see below), and some can be done from the comfort of your own hotel room.
Still not convinced you can get a good workout next to your generic hotel bed? Try 100 burpees for time, then report back!
2. Scout out the fitness center.
Some hotel fitness centers are truly luxurious, and a few mega-resort hotels even have their own CrossFit affiliates (or at least spaces optimized for functional fitness). However, a few dumbbells, a bench, and even a medicine ball or two are all it takes to create constantly-varied, challenging workouts for any level of athlete. If you’ve never tried a dumbbell thruster, you’re in for a(n exhausting) treat.
3. Prioritize sleep.
The sleepier you are, the less motivated you’ll be to get in a workout. Plus, sleep is important to overall recovery, whether it’s recovering from your last workout before hitting the road or recovering from a travel WOD. Make sure you do your research on how to fight jet lag — of course, some people prefer sleeping on a plane, which leaves them fresh for a burpee-fest as soon as they check into their room.
And for all you smartphone freaks: Prioritizing sleep also means quitting bedtime electronics, even in a hotel.
This one is a no-brainer. Pack a lacrosse ball or lightweight foam roller, then hit up MobilityWOD or RomWOD for some great, hotel room-friendly mobility routines to keep you supple (and get moving after a hunched-over stint on a plane, train, or automobile).
